SUMMARY:Northern NV SME Monthly Meeting - April
DESCRIPTION:Topic:  Lessons Learned from Independent Review of Tailings Storage Facilities \nMining companies are increasingly using independent review of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to help manage risk\, satisfy governance objectives\, meet regulator and insurance requirements\, and optimize operations. These reviews can take different forms\, depending on the drivers and objectives. The effectiveness of reviews can be highly dependent on the reviewer fit\, scope of the review\, and interpersonal dynamics. This presentation will share lessons learned – both technical and non-technical – from independent review of TSFs across the world. Recommendations and considerations for effective independent review based on these experiences will also be shared \nSpeaker: Jed Greenwood (Barr Engineering) \nJed Greenwood is a senior geotechnical engineer and vice president at Barr Engineering based in Minneapolis\, MN. He has over 20 years of geotechnical engineering experience and has worked extensively on the investigation and design of tailings dams for U.S. and Canadian mining clients as well as flood-protection dams for government clients. He has been the principal in charge for Barr dam safety reviews performed for Canadian oil sands operators and other mines in recent years. Jed is currently the international dam advisor for a tailings dam in Brazil. His project work has ranged from the design and analysis of dams and levees to forensic analysis of landslides to seepage analysis and stabilization measures for natural and constructed slopes. He has published on a number of geotechnical engineering topics. Jed is also skilled in numerical modeling using finite-difference and finite-element techniques.

SUMMARY:Northern NV SME Monthly Meeting - October
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Details\nTopic: NVMA overview \nPresenter: Amanda Hilton \n  \nTopic: Miner-to-Miner: Mark Twain \nFrom 1859 to 1864\, Samual Clemens went west to seek his fortune.  He worked as a miner in three mining districts; Unionville\, NV; Aurora\, NV; and Angels Camp\, CA.  Between his time as a miner in Esmeralda (Aurora) and Angels Camp\, he worked as a reporter in the Comstock Mining District in Nevada and San Francisco; on the Comstock\, he became Mark Twain.  Twain’s mining adventures were chronicled in his book “Roughing It” to be entertaining\, not autobiographical.  During his time in mining\, Twain wrote many letters.  From these letters and various collections\, the story of Twain as a miner is every bit as entertaining as “Roughing It.”  This presentation will summarize the story of Mark Twain as a miner. \n  \nPresenter: Larry Radford \n \nLarry Radford has over 40 years of leadership and operational experience in the mining industry. Radford currently serves as a board member for Revival Gold. Radford served as President & CEO\, and Director of Argonaut Gold Inc.\, where he led the 200\,000 ounce per year gold producer and oversaw a turnaround of the Magino Project in Ontario\, Canada. Previously\, Radford served as COO of Gold Standard Ventures Corp.\, where he led development of the South Railroad Project in Nevada. Before Gold Standard Ventures\, Radford held the role of Sr. VP & COO of Hecla Mining Company (“Hecla”) where he managed the operating portfolio of underground mines\, including the Lucky Friday mine in Idaho\, the Greens Creek mine in Alaska\, the Casa Berardi mine\, in Quebec\, Canada and the San Sebastian mine in Durango\, Mexico. \nPrior to his role at Hecla\, Radford held roles of increasing responsibility with Kinross Gold Corporation from 2007 through 2011\, including Vice President & General Manager of the Fort Knox mine in Alaska\, Vice President of Strategic Mine Planning and Vice President of South American Operations. Radford worked with Barrick Gold Corporation from 1989 to 2007\, including 14 years at the Goldstrike mine in Nevada\, two years at the Tambo mine in Chile and two years as General Manager of the Cowal mine in New South Wales\, Australia. \nRadford is a second-generation miner from Idaho’s Silver Valley\, who began his mining career in 1984 with Coeur d’Alene Mines Corporation. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from the University of Idaho and an MBA from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He is a member of SME and a registered Professional Engineer in Idaho.
